I finished work for the week and eager to fish my first kayak tournament I headed straight to the Swan River for round 3 of YH series in Tasmania.
After a quick chat to some other competitors, I set up camp and had an early night because I planned to cover a fair bit of water prefish day because with all the fresh water in the system, it was anyone's guess where the fish were going to be holding.
Pre fish (the day prior to the comp), I was up early with coffee in hand and I was ready to hit the water. I headed upstream first in hope the Bream had headed up to start spawning, unfortunately this was not the case. After pedaling back down the system I did end up finding a couple of fish and some good signs late in the day, so I did have a plan for the following morning.
I headed back to camp where I was able to meet the rest of the competitors and quickly they made me feel right at home. After a few war stories and a couple of fizzy drinks I was set for another early night.
On comp day, luckily for me for this round of the YH series we were allowed to launch at any ramp on the system so I picked the closest one to where I had found some good signs the day before. With the weather suspected to chop up and me wanting to get further down the system I left my original plan after 30-40mins and made a run down stream. I hit the oyster racks on the way down throwing the New Daiwa Bait Junkie Grubs and it was here where I had the opportunity to capitalise and get the result I was looking for. Unfortunately it just wasn’t my day and I pulled the hooks on four different occasions.
When the going is as tough as it was you couldn’t afford to waste the chances like that, but hey that’s just fishing. I headed further down the system but with wind really starting to blow it made it super difficult fishing, in the end it became too much and all competitors called it a day at around lunch time.
For me the YH experience was a fantastic one. It was a well ran tournament with a nice relaxed atmosphere which generally isn’t the case with tournament fishing.
I made some new mates and I’m definitely looking forward to round 4!
See you there!
